The EESC delegation visited the International Labour Organisation (ILO)
The delegation of the European Economic and Social Committee composed of members of the Section for Employment, Social Affairs and Citizenship (SOC) and the Section for External Relations (REX) visited the International Labour Organisation (ILO) in Geneva on 9 March 2010 with the aim to enhance the relationship based on the Cooperation Agreement signed on 1 December 2005.
The joint meeting was chaired by George Dragnich, Executive Director for Social Dialog, ILO, Petra Ulshoefer, Director of the Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia, ILO, Filip Hamro-Drotz, President of the REX Section, and Leila Kurki, President of the SOC Section.
The programme was open by Rudi Delarue, Director of the ILO Office in Brussels, with a presentation on cooperation between the ILO and the European Union. The morning session was focused on the global economic crisis, its impacts on workers and enterprises and prospects ahead. The common discussion was concentrated on the implementation of the Agenda of Decent Work and the Global Jobs Pact. The afternoon session was devoted to the topic The global economic crisis and developing countries.
Members of the EESC delegation met Dan Cunniah, Director of the Bureau for Workers’ Activities, and Jean-François Retournard, Director of the Bureau for Employers’ Activities.
Joint conclusions of the meeting define proposals for the cooperation between the ILO and the EESC in the area of the social affairs. Their activities will be focused particularly on the promotion, ratification and application of the ILO conventions including the fundamental principles and rights at work, corporate social responsibility (CSR), social dialogue, immigration and social integration.
The cooperation in the area of the external relations will be focused on the neighbourhood policy (Eastern Partnership and EuroMed), Latin America and Africa.
