Representatives of the Dutch Presidency to the Council of the EU, the European Commission and the Visegrad countries, business representatives and other stakeholders met on 27 May in Brussels to debate the current state of the Better Regulation Agenda, especially in the light of its one-year anniversary. The event was organized by the CEC Government Relations agency and the Europeum Institute for European Policy under the auspices of the Confederation of Industry of the Czech Republic. Participants agreed that more transparency in the legislative process and more independence of impact assessments are needed. The importance of stakeholders´ involvement was also stressed.

„We (European businesses) welcome the Better Regulation Agenda of the European Commission, however, we still want more transparency, for example we want to see draft impact assessments so that we can feed in with our input,“ explained the Chair of the Better Regulation Working Group at BUSINESSEUROPE Jens Hedström.

Europeum presented its policy paper on the EU Better Regulation Agenda which states that Visegrad Group countries share two objectives: introducing sectoral burden reduction targets and reinforcing the examination of the EU legislation’s impact on competitiveness of businesses. It is important that better regulation represents key principles which will be followed by EU legislation in various areas, for example the Digital Single Market.

The Chair of the Commission on Regulatory Impact Assessment of the Legislative Council of the Czech Government Jiřina Jílková stated that „Better regulation is crucial, however, it is important that the real meaning of better regulation is understood by as many people and SMEs as possible so that the Better Regulation Agenda does not remain an abstract game played in Brussels“.
