The state has one of the oldest metal deposits dating back to 3,500 million years and produces about 57 different minerals. It holds the position of being the sole producer of Lead and Zinc ores, selenite and wollastonite. Makrana area in Rajasthan is world famous for its marble mining. Along with marble, granite, sandstone & Kota stone of various shades are available in the state. The state has both open cast and deep mining. Almost the entire production of calcite, natural gypsum and silver in the country comes from Rajasthan. The State is a major producer of ball clay, calcite, clay, copper ore/conc., feldspar, fireclay, limestone, ochre, phosphorite/rock phosphate and steatite. The economic liberalization by the central govt in 1991 opened up power generation, mining and metallurgical industries for private investment in the sector, the reforms in policy in 1994 allowed 100% foreign equity opening the segment to international players.
