EU social dialogue needs a change

EU discussed the role of social partners within the economic management and administration.

On the initiative of the European social partners, the European Commission has organized a high level conference „A New Beginning for the Social Dialogue“ on Thursday 5th March in Brussels.

The European social dialogue that has been developed for thirty years lost its dynamics in the last several years. That’s why the new European economic administration and the strategy Europe 2020 are demanding a new paradigm for the social dialogue at all levels.

„The latest crisis has deepen inequalities and changed the perception of the national politics and their influence on other member countries,“ the EU Commission’s vice-president for the euro and social dialogue Valdis Dombrovskis said.

„The European parliament calls for better involvement of the social partners into the new economic administration and management and European trimester,“ the president of the EU parliament Martin Schulz added.

The European social partners have been represented at the conference by the heads of BUSINESSEUROPE, UEAPME, CEEP and ETUC.

„BUSINESSEUROPE is supporting the social dialogue since the 1990’s,“ the BUSINESSEUROPE‘s director general Markus Beyrer stressed. „Now, it is necessary to transform it and make a real partnership from it. Most problems have developed not because of the lack of the social dimension, but because of the lack on competitiveness.“
