Cyber Security of Cloud Services

On the 31st May, the Confederation of Industry of the Czech Republic organized next international discussion dedicated to data economy and online platforms. The main topic was cyber security, which is no longer just a technical or legal matter.

Foreign policy, cyber diplomacy and digital sovereignty are important elements of any cybersecurity framework. All these aspects come together in the policies and regulations that governments adopt in order to make their citizens and businesses safer and more resilient against cyberattacks. At the same time, we need to realize that this is not just a national issue, but also a European and global one.

Any regulatory interventions, however, have complex impacts. They may result in limiting the available technologies and reducing customer choices, in delayed digital transformation, stifled innovation, distortion of competition and disproportionate administrative burden. We do not face simple choices such as whether we want a more robust cybersecurity, faster digital transformation, or more digital sovereignty. We face a difficult balancing exercise that would enable progress in all these strategic objectives.

All these aspects were discussed by Dita Charanzová, Vice-President of the European Parliament, Petr Očko, Deputy Minister at the Czech Ministry of Industry and Trade, and Martin Klumpar, Head of the Cloud Computing Regulation Unit at the National Cyber and Information Security Agency of the Czech Republic. Prestigious representatives of European business also took part in the discussion - Florian Pennings, Government Affairs Director for Cybersecurity at Microsoft and Michiel Steltman, Director at Online Trust Coalition, Netherlands. The debate was moderated by Jana Pattynová, partner at the technology law firm Pierstone.

All speakers agreed that transatlantic cooperation, strategic partnerships, harmonization of standards and avoiding the isolation of Europe are key strategic objectives. But we also have to face challenges ahead, such as whether the rules-based approach is the right one. More details can be found in the summary of the key messages and recommendations here.
