EU imposes sanctions on Ukraine

On 20 February, during an extraordinary meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council on the deteriorating situation in Ukraine, the EU Ministers called for an immediate cease of violence and urged all political sides to engage in dialogue in order for a lasting solution to be found for Ukraine. The Ministers furthermore decided to impose sanctions targeted to those that are considered responsible for human rights violations and excessive force used in Ukraine during the protestations.

The sanctions include visa bans, freeze of assets as well as suspension of export licences on equipment that might be used for internal repression purposes. The relevant working parties will start preparations for the immediate implementation of the measures.
