The Confederation of Industry welcomes the kurzarbeit

The Confederation of Industry welcomes the introduction of the "kurzarbeit" system for companies affected by the anti-coronavirus measures, but the proposal approved by the cabinet appears to be too cautious, the confederation told CTK.

Under the kurzarbeit" (part- and short-term work) system, the state would pay companies affected by the anti-coronavirus measures some 50-80 percent of their employees' wages depending on the reason of the limitation of their performance. The aim of the measure is to mitigate the impacts of the coronavirus crisis on companies and to prevent layoffs.

"It is a breakthrough decision for the operation of companies and for maintaining employment. But the government is still assessing all impacts, so the proposal it approved is too cautious and contains too many restrictions," confederation vice-president Jan Rafaj said. Important measures, which were not included in the proposal, would be setting the validity of the programme for at least six months and the ceiling for the state contribution at 1.5 times the average wage at least, Rafaj said.
